Austin 2007
IFEC's 2007 conference was in Austin, Texas, in November. Activities captured in
photos here include chef demonstrations, product showcases, guest speakers and workshops,
as well as folks bidding in the annual silent auction for scholarships, editors
giving snapshots of their magazines at "Meet the Press" and editors and publicists
conferring during "Office Hours."
Among the workshops shown are a Sonoma wine and cheese pairing with cheese expert
Laura Werlin and a coffee and food pairing with Starbucks' education specialist
D. Major Cohen. More learning took place at a chuck wagon lunch hosted by The Beef
Checkoff through NCBA and tours that took us to local food producers, purveyors,
Central Market, and iconic barbecue and Mexican restaurants. Tour photos here (courtesy
of Karen Weisburg) are of the beef lunch, Salt Lick Barbecue and Pure Luck goat
cheese farm, plus a couple of candids from a shopping trip during free time.
On the final night, we took time to kick up our boots at a reception featuring music
by the Mike Clifford Band, plus a surprise -- the duo of IFEC-ers Carol Devine and
Todd Downs sounding like seasoned pros as they covered country and rock tunes. At
the gala dinner that followed, Mary Petersen (shown at the podium) was presented
with The Betty Award.
The final two shots in the series are (second-to-last) members of the 2007 Board
of Directors and (last) recipients of The Betty award. Board members pictured are (from left) Joan Holleran, Past President Alexei Rudolf, Vice President Allison
Perlik, Marilyn Dompe, Karen Weisberg, President Mary Humann and Kathy Hayden. Not
shown are Secretary Patty Johnson, Treasurer Mary Petersen, Sherri Daye Scott, Beth
Shepard and Tia Woodward. Betty winners shown are
Gail Bellamy, Linda Funk, Peggy McCormick, Larry Levine, Mary Petersen, Karen Weisberg, Don Odiorne, John Lawn and
Ann Segerstrom.
The 2008 conference will be in Cleveland, Ohio, November 3 - 5.
